Kuchon goes to chop some firewood and gets stopped by a lady who proceeds to harass him until her husband comes home. Chaehwa comes and rescues him by talking the husband out of beating Kuchon to death. They walk home together and she tends to his wounds.
Chaehwa goes to work at a jade factory. There seems to be a problem at the factory as bandits keep stealing the jade through transportation. She recommends Kuchon for the job. He successfully delivers the jade and uses the money to buy Chaehwa a jade hair piece. On his way, he is seen by Chaehwa's maid. He runs away from her and hides from her.
