I always do some quick research before starting a new drama: W-Two Worlds seem to be highly rated on MyDramaList, have a great cast, and is almost done airing (so I won’t have to wait a whole week for the next episode)…so here we go!

CHARACTERS

Kang Chul (Lee Jong Suk) – the rich male lead that has a dark backstory; I’ve seen a few dramas by LJS (I Can Hear Your Voice, Doctor Stranger, Pinocchio as well as Secret Garden) and was always drawn to the character he plays.  His most recent roles seem to have a similar vibe to them: the main lead whose life is in danger but he appears light-hearted, goofy, and quirky despite his circumstances.  Just watching the first episode, his character in W seems to fall in the same category.  After a near death-incident, Kang Chul is making jokes at the hospital.  I tend to enjoy watching quirky characters and think that this won’t disappoint! Oh, and his irresistible crooked smile is always a bonus.

Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo) – the ditsy/easily-frazzled female lead; I haven’t watched as many dramas by HHJ, the last one being the mega-popular Dong Yi (2010) and the other being Iljimae (2008). They have been a while ago, and it’s the first time seeing her act in a current-time drama so I’m excited to see what she’ll bring to the drama.  From what I noticed, most female roles in sageuk dramas have a very conserved/innocent way of acting – they tend to have a lot of wide-eye stares and over-exaggerated expressions.  However, it irks me when actors over exaggerate in real-time dramas so let’s see how this plays out.

Yoon So Hee (Jeong Eu Gene) – Kang Chul’s secretary/friend; the second female lead (?): she’s Kang Chul’s secretary but seems like she takes an interest in him.  I’m assuming that the two main leads will end up together as the story progress and hope she’s one of those second leads that can separate her professional and personal life (i.e. she won’t sabotage or slow down the story arc by her jealousy).

Seo Do Yoon (Lee Tae Hwan) – works for Kang Chul/friend; the second male lead (?): he seems to have an ongoing bromance with Kang Chul and I can’t wait to see it develop over the course of this drama.

Park Min Soo (Heo Jung Do) – OYJ’s boss doctor; I think he’s there for comic relief and he seems to be that character that fits the description of “don’t judge the book by its cover."  He’ll do things that don’t match his position as the head surgeon (as evident by his obsession of comic books and even calling OYJ 10 times to ask for a spoiler).

Kang Suk Bum (Kang Ki Yong) – OYJ’s colleague; I just finished watching Oh My Ghost and am happy to see him in this drama as well.  Let’s see if he’ll support OYJ from the background as she deals with this dimension/time-travelling business.

Sun Mi (Ryoo Hye Rin) / Park Soo Bong (Lee Si Un) / Yoon Hee (Yang Hye Ji) – the Manhwa team; are they there for logistics or will they significantly add to the storyline?

EPISODE 1 SUMMARY

  • Background story of KC: he's a gold medalist in Athens 2004, family was mysteriously murdered and he became the prime suspect of the case.  After serving his time in prison and contemplating about suicide, he decides to live and catch the real murderer.
  • Background story of OYJ: she’s an assistant doctor at a hospital and her father’s a manhwa author.  The manhwa ‘W’ is about KC’s life.  She gets bribed by her doctor boss, PMS, to seek spoilers for the manhwa.  When she does this, she finds out that her father was missing and gets pulled into the ‘W’ world.
  • When she gets there, the two mains meet.  KC is bleeding on top of a rooftop of a hotel and she gives him some emergency medical attention.  OYJ then travels back to her world and realises the new chapter of the manhwa is a replicate of her experience in the ‘W’ world.  She’s confused and has a mini-breakdown while KC is trying to figure out her identity.

I'm guessing that the main focus of the drama will be catching the suspect who murdered KC's family and that same person (or an accomplice) left him bleeding on top of the hotel.  My initial guess would be one of the Olympians or someone related to one and this follows the storyline of a sore loser trying to get revenge.  At the same time, I think recent kdramas don't follow the logical route and often have twists and turns over the course of the episodes.  More information will definitely be revealed.

I like how they transitioned between the two worlds and used the manhwa to connect the two.  As with other time/dimension-travelling dramas, I'm curious how they will logically explain it (if they end up doing so).  This leads to a whole string of questions: What's the reason behind it? How do they travel between the two dimensions?  Would KC be able to travel to OYJ's world or will OYJ be the only one switching between the two?  What happened to the dad?  How are the two worlds connected and are they occurring at the same time point?  Will her father continue to be missing throughout the story or will he show up and explain everything?  What's the mystery behind his disappearance?  What does 'W' stand for? Will the two worlds eventually merge as one?

My guess so far is that the two worlds seem to be occurring at the same point in time and that OYJ's father will reveal the answers to majority of my questions.  However, both worlds seem to take place in South Korea - so why doesn't the hospital that OYJ work in exist in W? It might be due to a time difference so the hospital is not built yet or it could be a comment to differentiate that the two worlds are different and would not overlap.  Travelling between the worlds seem to be through the comics as OYJ was physically pulled in by KC.  He might have been the one to 'summon' OYJ to 'W'.  When OYJ tried to re-enter into 'W', she was unable to do so by tapping the monitor.  This could hint that travelling between the two worlds is limited and it is permissible by circumstance.  It could also have something to do with the mysterious picture that OYJ found on her father's desk... What's the significance of that?

I probably can come up with a million more questions and possible answers, but let's just watch the next episode and see if it'll give us more answers or raise even more questions.
